| SEVERN (7) SHIPBUILDERS UK. New Steel Skerry Schooner Yachts built to Order. Introduction This Yacht has been developed from the lines of the vessel ‘Elgen’ a Norwegian Skerry boat built in 1769. The design incorporates the aesthetic lines and rig arrangement of the original, whilst introducing accommodation in keeping with the expectations of the modern cruising yachtsman. To this end the molded depth and beam have been increased which, together with an increase in displacement, have allowed a spacious accommodation to be incorporated and allows auxiliary propulsion to be incorporated. In keeping with modern expectations of sailing capabilities the hull form has been ‘massaged’ to give improved windward performance and the size of the rig increased in line with the hull ‘stiffness’, displacement and wetted surface area. The design brief included the ability to take the ground, enter the European canal system and operate as a Blue Water Cruising yacht. Certification The Skerry Schooner is built to comply with the Recreational Craft Directive for Category A – Ocean as a minimum standard. Hull construction is to (but not Classed) Lloyds Special Service Craft rules. The hull is fitted with Bilge keels to allow taking the ground and to keep the draft to a minimum. Accommodation comprises from fore to aft; Bosun’s Store, Owners Suite, Guest Cabin and Heads to port amidships and a further Guest Cabin to starboard, aft of ‘midships, Galley to port with a seat/pilot berth to starboard and aft under the quarter deck the Great Cabin incorporating the Saloon and Chart Space. The machinery is sited beneath the cockpit in a well-insulated box. Forepeak This is arranged forward of the collision bulkhead (Fr4) with access to it via a watertight hatch fitted to a 150mm coaming. The access ladder is formed by 20mm steel bar rungs welded to the bulkhead. The hull is lined with 50 x 20mm pine secured to the frames. The cable locker is arranged forward of Fr 2 and is arranged to drain into the bilge via a stainless steel ball valve. A Gunmetal spurling pipe is fitted (Classic Marine type HL-0595 or equal). Two 76mm dia High screw down Dome vents in bronze (Classic Marine type HL-1570 or equal) are provided in the deck one with duct to the lower part of the compartment to ensure air movement. Owners Suite This is arranged aft of the collision bulkhead and extends aft to Fr 9. Access to the cabin is via a hinged wooden door from the centreline passageway. A large double berth is sited on the centreline at the fwd end of the space with small shelf port and starboard at the head. Drawers are arranged under the berth with access from the foot. Large hanging lockers with shelves at the top are arranged one to port, one to starboard. An en suite washroom is accessed via a hinged wooden door on the longitudinal bulkhead A 76mm dia High screw down Dome vents in bronze (Classic Marine type HL-1570 or equal) is fitted to the deckhead over the shower and a circular opening portlight is fitted to the casing side (Classic Marine type CB-0602 or equal). Escape hatch. Guest Cabins There are two guest cabins, each a mirror image of the other. The port cabin extends from forward of Fr 8 to aft of Fr10, the starboard from forward of Fr9 to Fr 11.5. Access to these cabins is via hinged wooden doors from the centreline passage. The lower berth is arranged with a 200 litre fresh water tank beneath. A pipe cot is arranged over the lower berth suspended between the two end bulkheads on 40mm OD aluminium alloy ‘poles’. These can be stowed for single occupancy. Each cabin is fitted with a side table with locker under and a four drawer Tallboy. Hooks are provided for hanging clothing on the aft bulkhead. Each cabin is fitted with two circular opening portlights fitted to the casing side (Classic Marine type CB-0602 or equal) and a single 76mm dia High screw down Dome vents in bronze (Classic Marine type HL-1570 or equal) fitted to the deckhead.
